The Colorimetric Method

The colorimetric method of testing is where a colour develops in the sample to be measured when the chemical (reagent) is added. This colour is then compared to a colour scale supplied in the kit which determines the amount of the parameter being measured present, and produces a result in mg/L. the range for the colorimetric test is 0.0-2.5mg/L

Ammonia when in high concentration ca alter the smell and taste of water, it can also cause corrosion in pipework, ammonia should also be monitored in aquariums, ponds and fish farming applications due to it's high toxicity to fish and other aquatic organisms.

Nitrite is considered the most diffused chemical pollutant. It is produced during ammonia oxidisation or it originates from agricultural, urban and industrial waste. In fresh water aquaculture and aquariums Nitrite is highly toxic to fish, starving the blood of oxygen, effectively suffocating the fish. Nitrite should be kept at very low concentrations (below 0.1mg/L mg/L is equivalent to ppm-parts per million) since it is a carcinogenic and is dangerous to human and animals.

The PH Value of water is related to a large number of dissolved substances and is there for a good indicator of the quality of the water. The PH must be kept at the correct value as a solution that is too acid or alkaline may interfere with the precipitation of solids and will influence the balance of your pond. A pH reading of 7 is neutral, anything higher than 7 is alkaline, and a pH lower than 7 is acidic. Koi, goldfish and other pond fish and plants are genetically geared up to cope with the natural pH fluctuations that occur in all water garden ponds ponds. However, extreme pH levels must be avoided. A pH range between 6.8 and 7.8 is acceptable. 7.0 is ideal.
