Choosing your Isis pump

These are the basic facts you need to consider when choosing a pump. If you are in doubt, please ask us for advice.

Firstly, work out how many gallons of water there are in your pond. Measure the widest, longest and deepest part of your pond then do this simple equation:

Width (ft) x length (ft) x depth (ft) = volume (cubic ft.) x 6.23 = gallons.

A pump's performance is measured in how many gallons per hour (gph) it can pump, coupled with the maximum height above the surface in feet (head) to which it has to push the water. That's why it is important to consider what the pump will be powering - i.e fountain, waterfall, filtration or a combination of either these possibilities.

Pumps for filtration

To effectively filter a well stocked pond, you need a pump that will circulate it's full capacity every two hours. A pond holding 2400 gallons, therefore, would need a 1200 gph pump.

But if, for example, you also want a waterfall with a drop of 6ft to the pond surface, the flow rate required would be 1200 gph at 6ft head. In short, you will need a more powerful pump.

Waterfalls

The other thing to bear in mind with a waterfall is the depth or "thickness" of the water you would like to have running down it.

Use the diagram to work out how many gallons per hour are needed to achieve a given depth of water flow, one foot across. If it's wider, then multiply the gph by the width in feet.

Also remember to measure how many feet your waterfall is above the surface of the pond. Now you have both gph and height, go to the performance charts below. Reading feet off the vertical axes and gph off the horizontal axes, chose the pump with the performance curve closest to where two figures coincide.

1400, 1900, and 3000 + Models

The 1900-3000 + pumps will make an impressive fountain or waterfall and can also be used to drive a filter system.

All models come as standard with a pre-filter and the automatic models which are fitted with float switches which gives protection against low water levels and avoids the pump running dry.

1850DW and 3150DW

Both dirty water pumps, the 1700 and 3100, are fitted with a float switch as standard.

They are ideal for ponds with larger gravity fed filter systems where the pump can be incorporated in the filter, or in ponds, which would benefit from the pumps vortex impellor design, which means it has the capacity to handle suspended solids up to 20mm diameter.

All models offer thermal overload protection, stepped hose connector, continuously rated, low maintenance and a two-year guarantee. The DW models offer the same plus open vane vortex impellor design.
