The Japan Trips NIGATA 1999 Part 3 - in Trevor's own words:

We said our goodbyes to Shintero and pulled just down the road to 'Sakai Yamamatsu's... who is the brother of 'Sakai Matsunosuke' of Isawa ... who we hoped to be visiting later in the week and who lived about 300 miles away from Oyija City in the prefecture of where we were at the time... Sakai Yamamatsu has some superb Koi - both Nisai (two year old's) and Tosai (one year old's) in Kohaku and Sanke ...  We stood and stared at the quality of Sakai's Koi and although we were unable to price these due to Sakai not being around at the time ... Just as we were leaving that fish house Sakai appeared and invited us into his house for a coffee .. so again, minus our shoes, we squatted down around the large low table in the centre of the room and his wife brought in the coffee and biscuits ...  Sakai himself was a very happy man and smiled a great deal and seemed to enjoy life to the full ...  I got on extremely well with Sakai and half hoped that he may remember me on my next visit to him in the late Autumn ...

Sakai - Yamamatsu
After a short time Sakai said that he wished to show us some more of his Koi and escorted us to another fish house that we had not so far been into ... he had many tanks all full of high quality Koi, mainly Kohaku and Sanke .. and then Sal asked Sakai if he had anything extra special ... Sakai's face lit up and he smiled broadly and beckoned Sal to follow him .. we only just managed to squeeze around the smallest of all the tanks, which quite honestly I thought were part of the filter system, and he took off the cover and there to behold were some of the most magnificent one year old Koi that I have ever had the pleasure of seeing ...
Straight away I noticed a superb Kohaku, probably about 8" in length ... and decided that I would like to take a closer look at this Koi .. Sal had the same idea ..and that Koi was placed into a bowl and it was joined by a fabulous Sanke, also one year old and again about 8" in length ... Sakai managed to convince us that these two Koi were the very finest that he had at that time ... and no one could argue about that ... Peter asked Sakai 'How much he wanted for each Koi' - Sakai smiled and then came out with the price ... and even before he had told us the price I had decided that if Sal were to choose either one of the Koi then I would have a crack at the other one ... in particular I fancied the Kohaku, probably because the Kohaku of all the Koi is one of my personal favorites ... Anyway - to my bitter disappointment Sal took them both .. and then asked Sakai if he would grow them on for a year and a price for doing so was agreed on top of the price he was paying for these two Koi... let me tell you that had I been able to purchase either of these Koi that they would have had to have a retail price tag in the region of £3,000 each ... rather a lot for such a small Koi - but oh dear what magnificent Koi they really were and of course they can only be sold once .. and I felt pretty certain that there would be more than one serious Koi collector somewhere looking for such desirable Koi ...  I've always maintained that the easiest Koi to sell are the very best ones ! and was sure that these two Koi would not have been on my stock lists for very long ... But that was that Sal had bought them and done the deal ...

These are photo's of those superb young Koi

Feeling just a little dejected - I asked Peter to ask Sakai how much the Tosai Kohaku and Sanke were in the other fish house, the one we first went into .. and there, having agreed a price per Koi, I selected some extremely desirable pieces ... those, or what I have left of them, are now back with the Shintero and other breeders stocks I purchased, are in our own stock tanks back at Flamborough ... and very proud we are of that stock as well ...
